I would prefer a Florentine cutaway with a slightly smaller radius than what you have pictured and with the point a little higher on the upper bout.

Better, but smaller and higher yet. Matter of personal taste, though.

Try taking it too far, then back off.

I like the second revision better, although it's a bit rounded for my tastes, however what irks me more is the lower bout. It's flat spot is very wide. It looks funny to me at least.

the lower bout is not finished...the upper bout was done using x and y coord off of my template I made so it is accurate....I was just trying to design the cutaway so I can make the molds and jigs ......

Too circular for my taste. I'm super picky about cutaway shapes though. I prefer a curve that starts tighter and opens up toward the horn. These are my two favorites:

I struggled with this issue for quite a while too, never finding a shape I really liked.
Finally, I found that making the whole upper bout smaller on the treble side really helps.
Reworking the line of the upper bout from the waist to the cutaway point made it easier to find a balanced look.

Well, I like your first version best,
but agree that the lower bout should be rounder.
A thought I had was to take the upper bout on top, near the players head,
and make a turn towards the cutaway, continuing the line of the cutaway,
through the neck.
Dig?
Would be hard to do the neck attachment.
Peters guitar lends me to see this.
He must be a surfer.

I don't like venetian cutaways very rounded. Here's an OM i'm in the middle of right now.

But hey, this is just what I like, and that's why I build it that way. Everyone's taste is going to be different, so just build it the way YOU like!

I think you should draw the fingerboard on your design. The cutaway always looks different with the fingerboard extension. Then you will be able to decide which you like more easily.

Aesthetically, I think Peter.M's shot looks the most balanced.

Just my tuppence worth,

Wes, lots of beautiful instruments here to inspire you. I agree this is mostly a matter of personal preference. Sometimes moving a key reference point just a millimeter can make a huge visual impact. But you can see that beautiful instruments can be made from almost unlimited design adjustments. Congrats to all who posted their guitars thus far. I will be following this thread closely. I'm sure we'll see many more.

Hmm, the most important thing in guitar design is to make it yours, tuned to your taste and preference. Anything the rest of us Other guys say, or show off, doesn't matter.

Asking for help in design is saying, "I don't trust my own perspective." that's ok, it's part of the process but you know your self, your likes and dislikes, better then we do. And your the most important opinion.

Plus you can draw and redraw your shapes till the cows come home but until you box it up and bind it you won't really know or see the whole aesthetic. Cutaways are a signature for builders, just like rosettes and headstocks. Your a builder now, take stock in your worth and push yourself for your own design, your own perspective on what looks right. It's all that matters.

I'm finding that the designs I wasn't so stoked on a couple of years ago are now finding their way into my head when I'm working on new ideas. Reference is reference but my design is my design. Yours should be too. Do it your way. Pick your fav's and stack them on top of each other and make your own combining the best parts of each.

Waist is too sharp, butt is too flat. You are doing the wrong sequence in design. Get the whole body right before you design the cutaway.
